Legarda vows for salary increase for teachers, non-teaching personnel from Salary Grade 12 to Salary Grade 16.
Senator Loren Legarda has proposed a measure seeking to increase the salary of public school teachers and non-teaching personnel.
In filing Senate Bill No. 4, Legarda highlighted the need to provide support and compensation amid the increasing cost of living in the country.
Legarda's bill seeks to increase the salary grade level of public school teachers from Salary Grade 11 to Salary Grade 15.
“We must recognize the significant role of our teachers and personnel in nation-building. Our educational frontliners who have remained steadfast in our goal to provide the best for the Filipino children. With the increasing cost of living, it is high time we raise their salary,” Legarda said in a press release.
Under her proposed law, Legarda also wants teaching personnel or instructors in public universities and colleges to be granted an increase from Salary Grade 12 to Salary Grade 16.
The senator said the salary for a regular entry-level position in the government should not be less than P16,000.
Legarda, who once served as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance, sponsored bills pushing for "vital amendments" for the education sector, including funding for free tertiary education, free tuition for medical students in state universities and colleges (SUCs), and free WiFi in all SUCs.
Legarda also filed the Magna Carta for Private School Teachers and the Magna Carta of Public School Teachers to institutionalize support for education personnel.
